The College of Geoscience and Surveying Engineering of China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing was established on May 18, 2009, consisting of the Department of Resources and Geosciences and the Department of Surveying and Land Science, formerly known as the College of Resources and Safety Engineering. Its predecessors are the “Geological Survey Research Office” of the Beijing Graduate Department of China Institute of Mining and Technology in 1978 and the “Geological Professional Committee”. Tracing back to the 1950s, it was named the Coal Field Geology Department of the Beijing Institute of Mining and Technology established in 1953, and the Surveying Teaching and Research Office of the Department of Mine Civil Engineering of China Institute of Mining and Technology established in 1952, the Coal Field Geology Department of China Institute of Mining and Technology established in 1951 and the Geological Engineering Teaching and Research Office in 1950. Currently, the college consists of five departments---the Department of Energy Geology, the Department of Surveying and Land Use, the Department of Geological Engineering and Environment, the Department of Geophysics and Information, the Department of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information, and the Center of Experimental and Practical Teaching.

The college has one National Key Discipline, one National Key Discipline (Nurture), three doctoral degree authorization points of first-level discipline and mobile stations for post-doctoral research, three “Yangtze River scholars” award program specially appointed professors and disciplines, and one discipline enlisted in the sophisticated discipline construction in Beijing. Moreover, there are 17 second-level discipline doctoral programs, 21 second-level discipline master programs, Geological Engineering and Surveying Engineering 2 Engineering Master Fields, and 5 undergraduate majors in the college. In the fourth round of subject evaluation by the Ministry of Education, “Geological Resources and Geological Engineering” and “Surveying Science and Technology” are classified into Category A-. The Geoscience Discipline is among the top 1% of ESI in the world, and the majors of “Resource Exploration Engineering”, “surveying and mapping engineering”, and “Geological Engineering” have been entitled to professional engineering education certification. All 5 undergraduate majors were selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites.

In total, the college has 99 faculty members, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, 4 Changjiang (Yangtze River) scholar Professors, 5 national candidates for the New Century Hundred Thousand Talents Project, 1 national outstanding teacher, and 3 winners of the China Youth Science and Technology Award. 2 people were awarded the National Natural Science Foundation of China Outstanding Youth Fund, and 1 person was awarded funding for the Youth Top Talent Program; 1 person won the 32nd Sun-Yueqi Youth Science ,5 person won the Technology Award and 1 person won the Youth Surveying and Mapping Geographic Information Innovation Talent Award; 1 person won the 11th Huang-Jiqing Youth Geological Science and Technology Award; 1 person won the Coal Youth Science and Technology Award of the China Coal Society; 1 person won the 3rd Outstanding Female Geological Scientist Award of the Chinese Geological Society. 5 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, 3 Nominations for National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations and Beijing Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award. The college combines national strategic policies and the construction of new engineering disciplines, focuses on mining, serves the needs of national energy resources and local socio-economic development, cultivates strategic elite talents with comprehensive development in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor, scientific spirit and humanistic literacy, solid foundation, broad caliber, strong practice, patriotism, innovative spirit, and international perspective.

We attach great importance to the overall cultivation of students’ moral quality, basic knowledge, scientific research ability, and innovation awareness, with strong teachers, advanced teaching and experimental equipment, a good academic atmosphere, and scientific management, which provides a solid foundation for the growth of talents. In recent years, the college has experienced an enrolment rate of more than 60%, an employment rate of more than 98% for undergraduate students, and an employment rate of 95% for graduate students.

In terms of talent training, the college has won more than 30 provincial and ministerial-level teaching awards and 12 representative teaching projects. Student youth corps cell won the Beijing “May 4th red flag” advanced league branch title, branch was awarded the “Beijing pioneer cup advanced league branch” honor, class also won “Beijing demonstration class” title, in each session of the national college students’ geological skills competition, the national college students surveying and mapping skills competition, the national college student’s geophysical knowledge competition, etc., have achieved good results.

The college takes the National Key Laboratory of Coal Fine Exploration and Intelligent Development and the National Engineering Technology Research Center for Coal Mine Water Disaster Control as high-level scientific research platforms. It has complete disciplines, distinctive characteristics, strong strength, advanced equipment and fruitful results. The college has three innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, undertaking more than 100 national research projects such as national Key RESEARCH and development Program, national “973”, “863”, National Science and Technology Support Program, National Major Science and Technology Special Projects, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and two national “111” talent introduction bases. In the past five years, the teachers of the college have won 3 national Science and Technology Progress Awards and 35 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards.

The Party Committee of our college has been committed to taking up its responsibility, fully carrying on the Party branch’s politically core role as the fighting fortress, earnestly organizing the learning and studying of “two learning and one doing”, integrating the socialist core values into the whole process of teaching and educating, and effectively promote the all-round development of the party construction, ideological and political education, teaching and scientific research, discipline construction and other work of the college. The College Party committee was selected as one of the first batch of “national benchmarking colleges and departments for Party construction” (2018) and won the “Advanced Party Organization of Beijing Colleges and Universities (2020)” and “Beijing University’s pioneering and excellent advanced grassroots party organization”(2012); the student Party branch won the “Beijing University’s red ‘1+1’ demonstration activity first prize”(2017); the College Labor Union won the “Beijing Education Trade Union’s advanced teaching staff small family”(2017) and “Beijing Federation of Trade Union’s staff warm heart post”(2018); the College Youth League Committee won the “National Coal” Red flag Youth League Committee of carbon system “(2014).
